Designing for the 21st Century III
An International Conference on Universal Design

7-12 December, 2004 - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

This is an extraordinary moment. Never before in history have we been as varied in age and ability as we are at the start of the new century. Design matters more than ever. We must make choices about designing places, things, information and policies that not only reduce barriers but welcome everyone and enhance human health. Join Adaptive Environments, our Sponsors and Collaborators in a dialogue between nations and across disciplines.

Charrettes / Case Studies

A central feature of the interactive learning opportunities was to dedicate a portion of the entire conference to a design problem-solving process - the "charrette" - that paired experiential learning and citizen participation around a real place. Teams combined Brazilian and international participants who pre-registered and received preparatory materials. Charrettes began with a site visit within Rio de Janeiro during the Pre-Conference period to assess the specific issues, meet with users and begin the dialogue. A second session considered options and participants worked to reach consensus about approach and outcomes. Finally, the teams completed the process with a presentation of the results and suggestions for next steps during a plenary presentation by each team on the last day of the conference.

Pre-Conference Intensives

The Pre-Conference Intensives were either full-day or half-day sessions that provided state-of-the-art concentrated learning on specific topics. The sessions were led by individuals and teams of the foremost experts in the topical area. Pre-Conference sessions were in a sense "mini-conferences" that could stand alone or complement the experience of the dozens of sessions in the Core Conference.
